What is a Licensed Contractor

The Oregon Contractors Guide and Exam prepare and test an individual on knowledge concerning Business, Law and Project Management.

Having a Contractors License means that you have passed this exam on: Business, Law and Project Management.

It does not mean that an individual knows how to hammer a nail, screw in a screw, or build anything.

Above all, it does not mean that they know anything about how to properly build.

When one has finished building one’s house, one suddenly realizes that in the process one has learned something that one really needed to know in the worst way – before one began.

Friedrich Nietzsche

I have viewed an amazing number of poorly done jobs to then have the Homeowner state: “They were a Licenced Contractor” as though they believed that the License meant the Contractor knew something about proper building. –Because that is what we all believe.

I have a Contractor License, I am Bonded, I am Insured and as someone looking to have me perform work for them these are important requirements, but just as important is whether or not I know how to properly perform the work you need.

Before starting my own business, I worked with an amazingly brilliant group of carpenters who taught me the proper way to build.  They taught me how to plan ahead, observe, and build for the situation.  They taught me how to keep a client coming back for more work, not re-work.

Balanced Home Improvement is about helping clients achieve the best results to move them closer to their goals.  I offer my knowledge to provide the basis for balanced decisions.
